Baroque Era

The Baroque period began in Italy between the 1600s and the 1700s. The Baroque era was very dynamic, radiant in colors, dramatic and intense, passionate, and sensual and overpowered by emotions. The paintings in this era seemed to have characters that jump off the canvas. Light forms helped captivate this period due to the thoughts of godlike sun or the truth of the Holy Spirit. The Baroque naturalism maintains the religious themes in content. The elements of perception in the Baroque art are how we perceived the natural human figures in motion through space, time, and light. One of my favorite painters in the Baroque period was Peter Paul Rubens. Looking at Rubens painting you feel as if you are looking through a secret hole and the picture is taking place directly in front of your eyes.

Peter Paul Ruben

Peter Paul Rubens, a Flemish Baroque painter of the sixteenth and seventeenth Century focused his work, namely upon the nude, typical during this time. After the Renaissance period in Italy and Rome there was a period of new learning and a rebirth of Classical art. However some of the Catholic Churches became unhappy with artists whom they believed were no longer honoring the spirit of the Church. Therefore, a new form of art was created called Baroque. Baroque, evolved into a much more colorful movement, which only aided the emphasis of the glorification of God. As the Renaissance era began to come to a close Ruben found appreciation in the newly formed Baroque era due to his classical themes and symbolic messages. A few of Ruben’s pieces included the triptych painting “The Descent from the Cross,” “Samson and Delilah,” and “Saint George and the Dragon.”
