1. What is the article’s main idea?

In the article Turning the Tables on Iran written by C. Stolle Singleton, the main idea of the article is centered on the ideology of the United Statesappearing too weak to confront Iran regarding nuclear weapons and capabilities. The article also explains the ongoing attempts of President Obama to come to a compromise with Iran through many communication strategies, as well as the defiance Iran has had towards the entire nuclear issue. The lack willpower of the United States has also caused Iran to not take the sanctions seriously. “While the US and its allies possess military capabilities, they have failed to indicate whether they have the will to confront Iran Seriously for its violation of international law, thus emboldening that nation’s determination to acquire nuclear weapons technology” (Singleton 29). The article also defines how the Iranian government has made themselves look more powerful by continually rejecting the proposals of the United States for a compromise.

2. How is the main idea supported throughout the article?

The article’s main idea is supported through a number of statements and facts in the article. “While the President continues to assure the public that a nuclear Iran is an unacceptable threat and all options, including military action, remain on the table” (Singleton 29). Despite this statement from the President, no serious actions had been made towards Iran to penalize them for noncompliance with the UNSC (United Nations Security Council) sanctions, as well as requests from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). “In 2007, when faced with the threat of further United Nations Security Council sanctions, Ahmadinejad proclaimed ‘Iran has obtained the technology to produce nuclear fuel and Iran’s move is like a train…which has no break and no reverse gear’” (Singleton 29).
