Abstract

Effective communication between two different cultures could be impeded by intercultural misunderstandings. Communications works better when there is an attempt made on the behalf of each party involved to gain a better perception or knowledge of the others culture. However, most individuals are unaware of the cultural differences until an offense has already taken place, and the chance at forming that sought after relationship is ruined. This paper discuses the eleven areas of intercultural misunderstandings and some of the taboos associated with them. References are made between the American or Western culture and the Japanese culture. This paper also tries to explain areas where misunderstandings may have taken place within a business relationship. It particularly discusses the scenario of Margaret Owens, an executive in search of the next Japanese pharmaceutical representative to market a new line of drugs. Margaret was unsuccessful in her attempts, but not without finding out her own faults of the way in which she conducted her search, and her expectations of the individuals from another culture. Like many business professionals, Margaret was unaware of her own cultural differences and how they may be looked at as a taboo among a different culture until after the damage was already done.

Gaining an understanding and respect between cultures has proven to be the key to overall success both in our personal and professional relationships.
