Executive Summary

The aim of this paper is to analyze Wal-Mart based on the strategic management perspective.It starts by giving a basic overview of Wal-Mart, its operations and performance. Then the internal environment analysis gives a view of its resources, structure and processes. Next the external environment of Wal-Mart has been analyzed based on PESTEL factors and Five Forces Model. Finally, I use allthe above to perform the SWOT analysis and to develop suitable strategies forWall-Mart’s environment keeping its objectives.

Introduction

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.is the largest retailer in the world and also world's third largest public corporation withover two million employees and 8,500 stores in 15 countries. It has several operating divisions such as Wal-Mart Stores U.S, Wal-Mart Discount Stores, Wal-Mart Supercenter, Wal-Mart Market, Supermercado de Wal-Mart, Wal-Mart Express, Sam's Club, Wal-Mart International, Vudu, Private label brands and Entertainment. They sell variety of products that are used in everyday lives of people.Wal-Mart is diversifying into new sectors of retailing (pharmacy, automotive repairing,and grocery) year by year. Traditionally, Wal-Mart has been selling discount and cheap housewares and plastic goods, clothing, sporting goods, and toys. It also sells office supplies, hardware, home improvement, arts and crafts, cosmetics and toiletries, shoes, books and magazines, greeting cards, and confectionery, etc. Wal-Mart clearly defines its vision, mission, corporate values and goals as follows:
