The IKEA Position on Forestry

Wood is one of the most important raw materials for IKEA. It has properties that make it a beautiful and highly functional choice for many home furnishing products in the IKEA range. Wood is also renewable, recyclable and biodegradable. Economising on resources IKEA always strives to combine good design and high quality with cost consciousness. Resources and raw materials in product design, sourcing and production must be used efficiently, and we are constantly searching for new techniques to get the best possible return from every tree trunk. IKEA preferred sources For wood to be an excellent choice from an environmental point of view, the forest it comes from must be managed in a responsible manner. IKEA’s long-term goal is to source all wood in the range from forests certified as responsibly managed – what we call IKEA preferred sources. IKEA preferred sources must be verified as coming from forests certified as responsibly managed. The wood itself must come with chain of custody documentation so that it can be traced throughout the supply chain. The forest certification system must ensure a balanced cooperation between social, environmental, and economic stakeholders. Today, the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification system is the only one that meets IKEA requirements. IKEA minimum forestry requirements Until all IKEA suppliers can source IKEA preferred wood, every supplier of IKEA products containing solid wood, veneer, plywood or layer-glued wood must comply with IKEA minimum forestry requirements. These are defined in the Forestry Section of the IKEA code of conduct, IWAY.
