Arctic Wildlife Refuge

Arctic Wildlife refuge is place that harbors several types of species. It is a refuge that was set aside as a national wildlife. The area separated from interference by mankind is approximately 19 million acres. Environmental ethics state that non-human living things have the same right as living things. The plants and the animals that are conserved in this area have both intrinsic and extrinsic values. They are of benefit to the environment and mankind in general. Non-human living things also have a right to be conserved because of their existence in the same environment as human beings (Corn, 2003).

When these natural resources are interfered with, they are liable to extinction or migration. After this refuge had been developed policy makers and politicians saw the need of drilling an oil well in the area. The federal government, which mainly depended on the Middle East for their oil, wanted to have an oil dam of their own. Having discovered oil in the Arctic they purposed to drill an oil well in the wildlife refuge. Politicians who support this idea argue that the drilling will not have a considerable effect on the national wildlife refuge. Instead it will help to relieve the country from its dependence on other nations for oil. These will also help to reduce the prices of oil in the market (Corn, 2003).

To some extent this is true, when United States have their own oil well they will reduce their dependence on other nations for oil. Moreover, this act will help to reduce the oil prices in the World. However, it is false to state that it would not have a large impact on the national refuge. The initiation of drilling will mean that roads and airports have to be developed, people have to be frequently in the place and the oil might spill in the area.
