Abstract

This paper discusses the definition of diversity and why it is important in a high-involvement organization. I will discuss how people of different gender, race and religion place an important part in diversity. Why managers should be involved as well as their employees to help build an organization that will prosper.

DIVERSITY IN THE WORKFORCE

Diversity is defined as a characteristic of a group of people where difference exists on one or more relevant dimensions such as gender, race, and religion. It is the study of human behavior, attitudes, and performance in organizations.

Diversity issues are now considered important and are projected to become even more important in the future due to increasing differences in the United States. Companies need to focus on diversity and look for ways to become totally inclusive organizations because diversity has the potential of yielding greater productivity and competitive advantages.

There are several reasons why a diverse workforce will add value to an organization. When you have personnel of different ages, race, religion, sexual orientation, social class, personal functional experience, and geographical background, you have a diverse organization. Diversity promotes a corporation community and harmony, which maximizes personal talent and experiences. It responds to the need of the employees and enriches the climate for customers and associate satisfaction.

The single most important flaw of having a diverse program is that they group people in different categories concentrating on the label, for example black, female, or handicapped. Labeling deemphasizes the range of abilities and the potential that each person has. It is better to treat individuals as unique as possible, which can be difficult and uncongenial for larger organizations or companies.
