Health Problem Research

Trudy Brown

The World Health Organization (W.H.O 2007) define oral health as been free of chronic mouth and facial pain, oral and throat cancer, oral sores, birth defects, such as cleft lip and palate, perio dontal (gum) disease, tooth decay and tooth loss and other diseases and disorders that affect the mouth and oral cavity. If you have ever experience any any of the oral health issues listed above, then you would understand the importance of proper oral health and the effects it has mouth and the human body. I choose the matter of oral health as my topic to research in order to gain a more insightful look on the determinants of oral health, the effect it has on the body, prevention and treaments, the scope of oral health from a national standpoint and some potential implication this issues might have on health care administrators.

According to Healthy People 2020 (2011) the ability to access oral health care is associated with gender, age, education level, income, race and ethnicity, access to medical insurance, and geographic location. These determinants should be addressed inorder to reduce health disparities and improving the health of all Americans. In order to move forward Halthy People (2011) point out the fact that efforts are needed to overcome the barriers in order to gain access to oral health care that are instigated by geographic isolation, poverty, insufficient education, and lack of skills.

Oral Health affect more than a person appearance and sense of well-being it also affect your overall health. This speak true in the case of a 12 year old by the name of Demonte Driver who in February of 2007 died from developing a dental infection that spread to his brain.(Gehshan, S. (2008). Patients can also suffer from many different complications associated with improper oral health such as heart disease, diabetes, respiratory diseases, and premature and low weight babies. (n.p. (2004, June 17).
