Overview of the South African Labour Relation

History with regard to Labour relation has been a pressing issue South African since the arrival of the first Dutch settlers in 1662, where black were expected to do manual Labour. In the 18 centaury followed the industrialization and the 1st union in south Africa was the carpenters and Joiners. During the 19 century industries in South African begun to grow rapidly this industries began to employ black male and white female in numbers and several trade unions were registered. In the 1950 the then government passed the law Suppression of communism Act to ban political organization that supported union. Due to the shortcoming of existing Labour legislation the government introduces Bantu Labour Relation Regulation Act. There was pressure from the international investor for the government to reform.

Post-apartheid era there was urgent need to transform Labour legislation, the new government set to overhaul the whole legislative framework of Labour relation to give fruits to the new constitution and to bring into line with the international standard .But finally, the new Labour Relation Act, Basic Condition of Employment Act, Employment Equity Act, Skill development Act were in place .This was just a short brief overview of our Labour Relation.
