Point Paper - Carter Cleaning Company: The New Safety Program

Problem Statement:

Employees of The Carter Cleaning Company are unwilling to wear the recommended safety goggles that reduce unsafe acts on the job. There are many unsafe conditions in the laundry and cleaning industry. Personal protective equipment such as safety goggles are recommended in order to adhere to OSHA terms and conditions along with reducing physical, chemical, mechanical and electrical hazards, (Labor, 2012).

Key Elements:

- Each of the six stores is a small production plant, in which the high-pressure steam and compressed air machines operate at high temperatures washing, cleaning, and pressing garments under hot and slippery conditions.

- Chemical vapors are produced continually and are used in the cleaning process.

- OSHA and the Environmental Protection Agency have instituted strict guidelines regarding the management of these plants since chemically hazardous waste is continuously produced.

- Posters and propaganda are placed in each store notifying employees of their right to be told what hazardous chemicals they are dealing with and what proper the proper method for handling each chemical is.

- Not all the chemicals that are used in the stores require workers to use safety goggles, but some such as the hydrofluoric acid are very dangerous.

- Important safety guidelines for cleaning workers and stores must be followed including permits, environmental issues and equipment upgrades and many states require managers to be certified (“Policy DAR-9”).

- The safety goggles are often troublesome for employees.

- The goggles are somewhat uncomfortable and become smudged easily cutting down on visibility.

Stakeholders:
