Organizational Behavior Challenges within AT&T Mobility

Abstract

AT&T Mobility is a division of AT&T Inc. a multi-national telecommunications and technology solutions corporation. Within AT&T Inc., AT&T Mobility is a fairly young startup division of an organization that is more than a century old. What makes this relationship unique is that the young startup has quickly grown to become the most profitable division within the company. Additionally, while AT&T Mobility continues to grow at a steady pace the remaining divisions of AT&T Inc. have seen substantial losses within their core markets and in many cases have become a net loss to the company as a whole. These factors translated into AT&T becoming an organizational mixed bag of the old established and conservative ways of AT&T Inc. blending with young technology savvy employees and managers who grew up in a dynamic technology driven industry. The resulting culture clash has made for many management and organizational behavior challenges. Over the past 5 years the failures within the relationship dynamic became obvious and demanded executive management attention. Initiatives were put in place to address the many challenges the organization faced. It wasn’t until the end of last year that obvious pay-off of these initiatives began to be realized. The result was to blend and focus the workforce into a unified team which embraces and prospers from the inclusion of the many diverse talents of its employees. The work is not done; there are still opportunities within many areas which need to be addressed.
