Anwar al-Awlaki

Anwar al-Awlaki is a terrorist who is a serious threat to the national security of the United States of America. He is a bi-lingual (English and Arabic) dual citizen of Yemen and the U.S. whose intent is to commit jihadist acts of violence against America and encourage other Muslims to do the same.

Anwar al-Awlaki was born on April 22, 1971. He is of Yemen descent. Awlaki is and Islamic lecturer, spiritual leader and former imam who has become an operational planner and trainer for Al Qaeda and all of its franchises. Promoted to regional commander within Al- Qaeda, Anwar is on the UN's list of individuals associated with Al- Qaeda. With the approval of the US National Security Council and President Barack Obama, Awlaki is the first US citizen ever placed on the CIA target list.

Anwar al-Awlaki parents are from Yemen. His father is a scholar who earned a master's degree in agricultural economics as New Mexico State University and a doctorate at the University of Nebraska. He worked at the University of Minnesota from 1975 to 1977. Awlaki and his family returned to Yemen in 1978 when he was 7 years old. Anwar lived in Yemen for 11 years and studied at Azal Modern School. His father was Agricultural Minister and President of Sana’a University. He was a prominent member of Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh's ruling party. Mohammed Mujur, Yemen’s Prime Minister since 2007, is a relative of Awlaki. In 1991 Anwar Awlaki came back to the United States to attend college. He was President of the Muslim Student Association at Colorado State University, where he earned his Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. He trained with the Afghan mujahedeen, who fought the Soviet Union's occupation of Afghanistan with US and Saudi help, during a summer of his college years.
