Monitoring Employees on Networks: Unethical or Good Business?
An e-mail has many benefits to an organization. First it is cost effective. That means that it would be cheaper to send an e-mail rather than voice, postal or overnight delivery cost. Second you can communicate with customers. Many customers would rather chat through email rather than over the phone. An organization will want to limit an employee’s use of e-mail during the work hours because it can lead to loss of time and productivity. If personal traffic on the company computer is too high, it can also clog the company’s network so that legitimate business work cannot be performed. Also anything that the employees send out in an e-mail during work hours will come back to the employer. An organization also fears leakage of confidential information and trade secrets through email or blogs. Those are just a few examples of why an organization would want to limit their employee’s use of e-mails during work hours. Once an e-mail leaves an organization it is usually meant to go to the person or persons you send it to, but can wind up being spread throughout the internet through computer hackers.
The effect of instant messaging has the same effect as an e-mail. Instant messaging allows the company a better way to communicate to its customers or its workers to help improve the flow of information around the business. An important aspect for a business to thrive is its way to communicate not only within its organization but also with customers. A benefit of instant messaging is that whenever you have a problem with a product you have you can always go to the company’s website and chat directly with a customer service representative.
