TV Everywhere!

It is commonplace these days to see Clocks in every room of the house(Each clock showing different times). I remember the times as an young student in early 90’s, there was only one clock in our drawing room, a large, old one that my father sincerely set on every Sunday with reference to Doordharshan News timings.

So, when I asked my newly wedded friend why so many clocks these days, he told the secret – There were 9 Clocks he received as gifts during his wedding reception, and what to do with them!. We can after all, make a large gift pack that looks astonishing for a mere 200 bucks! He honestly told that after hanging 4 of them in all his rooms (including kitchen), he will somehow recycle the same as gifts in some other weddings!

The matter doesn’t end with Clocks. I have seen Ceiling Fans in kitchens, and even in Toilets! There is a recent advertisement that offers a free split 0.75 Ton split AC for the kitchen if you buy 4 split ACs for your bedrooms and hall. Height of consumption economy, perhaps!

Nevertheless, when I saw three brand new LCD TVs in the 3BHK flat that belongs to the friend of my Dad, I was really surprised. Probably the wedding gifts are being upgraded from wall hangers to clocks to ceiling fans to TV! But, it could not be the case here, as the Uncle in question was already happily married with two small kids. There were no recent weddings or receptions.

When I asked my dad about this, he was laughing! The story is quite simple. The Uncle was in the process of buying a LCD TV (Of course, only one to replace existing old one). So one morning, while browsing the net, he saw a popup ad that led him to an online ecommerce site selling electronic gadgets. He was attracted by the price offered for LCD TV, which was about 25% cheaper from open market prices. Impressed, he registered with the site and started the process for placing the order.
