One of the building that can be preserved as Malaysia’s National Heritage is Majestic Hotel in Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin, Kuala Lumpur. Majestic Hotel, the colonial heritage building that built in 1932 was designed by a Dutch architect, Von Leangeanderg and become one of the famous hotel of Kuala Lumpur in its time. It was originally closed in 1984 and reopened in December 2012.

The reason that Majestic Hotel was chosen is because the hotel was the signature of boom years in Malaya leading to World War II and came to be the place for glamorous social events, government receptions and the residence for prominent international visitors. It was also used for crucial meetings debating Malaya’s independence. The most memorable event is Dato Onn bin Jaafar organized an inaugural meeting for the development of the Independence of Malaya Party (IMP), a non-racial party at the Majestic Hotel on 17 September 1951. It was presided by Tan Cheng Lock, the President of the Malayan Chinese Association (MCA). A resolution was adopted by one thousand people - representatives of the Malay, Chinese, Indian, Eurasian and other communities to fight for self-government within ten years.

Furthermore, amidst the rapid development and fast moving commuters and corporate working groups of Kuala Lumpur lies The Majestic Hotel, one of the oldest and most unique structures of the capital. What makes this hotel so much more unique was that it was once used as the National Art Gallery before its current large space along Jalan Tun Razak. The hotel closed its doors in 1984, and then was home to the National Art Gallery in the 1990s. It was left vacant after the gallery moved in 1998 to its own premises before YTL Hotels and Resorts began its RM250mil refurbishment last year.
