Are You Sure This Is Fat Free?

More often than not we as consumer of food products purchase food based on the amount of calories that we assume do not exist in the foods that we eat. Based on what has been explained on the nutritional facts label we are under the impression that what we are reading is the calculation of the food we are consuming. What is not being explained is that the fat content on packaged foods is being calculated on a “weight basis.” Fat content actually has to be calculated by its calorie value to determine how much fat is truly in the foods that we eat. This will break down the fat content in certain foods by using calorie based calculations.

Like many I live a busy lifestyle leaving me with little to no time to cook fresh meals. I almost always take my alternative route which is fast foods or frozen foods. Although it is not the healthiest choice of food one of my favorite things to stop and get for breakfast is a Breakfast Scrambler from Krystal’s. For lunch the most popular item to eat is Taco Bell’s soft taco supreme. For dinner I often get a pepperoni pizza from the frozen food section. According to the nutritional facts given this is what is in the foods that I eat.

Breakfast

Krystal’s Breakfast Scrambler (Serving Size 1 serving= 310 g)

Calories in 1 serving= 440

Fat content is 26 g

1 g of fat has 9 calories

2 g of fat = 2 * 9 = 18 calories.

The fat content is (18/440) * 100 = 4.09 %

Protein content is 20 g

1 g of protein has 4 calories

20 g of protein = 20 * 4 = 80 calories

The protein content is (80/440) * 100 = 18.2.%

Lunch

Taco Bell Taco Supreme (Serving Size 1 serving= 113 g)

Calories in 1 serving= 220

Fat content is 14 g

1 g of fat has 9 calories

2 g of fat = 2 * 9 = 18 calories.

The fat content is (18/220) * 100 = 8.2 %

Protein content is 9 g

1 g of protein has 4 calories

9 g of protein = 9 * 4 = 36...
