The Walgreen Company was established 109 years ago by founder, Charles R. Walgreen. Today the organization is based on a century old company culture that reflects the vision of its founding father. The paper to follow will define organizational culture and behavior, diversity, and communication. The paper to follow will then explain in detail how these terms and concepts relate to the Walgreen Company as an organization.

Organizational Culture

An organizational culture is a set of common values, beliefs, aspects, and psychology shared by members of an organization. Organizational culture often guides the way that members of an organization interact with each other and people on the outside. The Walgreen Company has a strong organizational culture that is based on the principles of "The Four Way Test." This philosophy was introduced to the company by Charles R. Walgreen Jr. in the early 30's. The Four Way Test states: 1.) Is it the truth? 2.) Is it fair to all concerned? 3.) Will it build goodwill and better friendships? 4.) Is it beneficial to all concerned? (RGHF, 2007). This test is the basis of the organizational culture at the Walgreen Company. The test can be found in each location and it is the very first thing that new hires learn. The rest of the company culture is based on the beliefs and vision of Charles R. Walgreen Sr. When Mr. Walgreen opened his first location in 1901, he had a vision of an establishment that offered superior customer service. The Walgreen's Creed, written by Mr. Walgreen, reads: "We believe in courtesy, in kindness, in generosity, in cheer, in friendship, and in honest competition." Current company values such as "The customer first" and "There is a way" reflect the ongoing vision of Charles R. Walgreen.
