Summary: ”Why Johnny Can’t Fail”

In the article “Why Johnny Can’t Fail,” the writer, Jerry Jesness, starts his first section: ”How the floating standard has destroyed public education” with a confession of faults and mistakes that he has made, and the passing grades that he gave the students who didn’t deserve them. In other words, Jesness says about himself that he was ” A Servant of The Floating Standard”. He said that Americans don’t like the level of the their floating education, but they like the schools that their children graduate from because they can do great there. He says: ”Floating standard makes everyone a winner.”

He started talking about his experience in the section” The Intention.” Jesness was introduced to the floating standard in 1979,in South Dakota. A few years later, Jesness moved to Texas. At the grading first time, he tried to be a straight and faith teacher and failed some students, but he failed again, so he learned to ignore the cheating and deny the plagiarism. Afterwards, Jesness was between two choices, either to accept the floating standard or to leave the public education. He came up with this result after five years of experience. Jesness explained some grading techniques that his principal advised him to use in order to help his students pass. As a result, all his ESL students passed. Even the ones who couldn’t learn English were advanced to the next grade. Once, he sent a student to the office for punishment and that was situated as his inability to manage and control his class, and the failing grades were evidence that he was not encouraging his students. So his boss didn’t offer a new contract. After a year of being a salesman, Jesness missed his classroom and he went back for teaching after he learned his lesson and he gained a bonus that year.
