Managing Information Systems

            Information systems provide the infrastructure in enabling communication for every type of business in modern global economy. Managers in charge of these vital systems face several key issues in their efforts to effectively manage corporate information systems. Information systems, particularly hardware and software components are becoming obsolete very quickly. Another important issue involves data storage and availability. The necessity for expanding data storage and processing capacity brings management concerns about space, facility requirements, and energy consumption.

           According to Joe Valacich (2012), the cycle of hardware and software obsolescence is self-propagating. When software becomes obsolete, creating a program to replace will often require powerful hardware, and the latest hardware capable to handle much demanding software. Managers need to be aware of the life cycle of hardware and software’s in an effort to conduct cost-effective information systems for business. The following sections will offer a glimpse at some of the tools and standards that management uses to maintain up to date information systems and efficient running programs.

Preventative Maintenance

            Maintaining information systems is a vital part of managing business technology needs. Keeping software configured properly is an ongoing process that requires attention and adequate training for employees. Managers also need to be aware of the constant changes of their systems so they ensure that employees possess the equipment needed to keep the software running at optimal levels.
