Assignment: How Bias Influences Critical Thinking

The definition of Critical thinking insinuates no emotions may be used in making the decision. Because we are humans, few of us do not have any biases or can operate in a neutral manner. The way belief formation occurs in ones mind is subconscious. “Psychologists refer (sic) to these features, some of which are unexpected and surprising, as cognitive biases. Cognitive biases skew our apprehension of reality and interfere with our ability to think clearly, process information accurately, and reason objectively.” (Brooke Noel Moore, Richard Parker, 2012, p. 17). Just yesterday I examined a gentleman’s transmission. The transmission had significant damage, and it was obvious it would be costly. My perception or bias toward a transmission problem in a 5 to 7-year-old car, or older is simple, two thousand dollars beats 30,000 dollars for a new car. My sales techniques are derived from Aristotelian rhetoric. I noticed that people have a tendency to make a knee jerk reaction and decide to buy another car without critically thinking about it when one is told their transmissions is bad. My arguments always surrounded my truck. I used it as an example of why I suggest keeping the car and fixing it. My truck was bought new by me in 1988 and is in mint condition. When it needs repair, it is a no brainer for me, fix it now. I spend, as much time as needed using biased mildly persuasive augments in terms my customer understands to explain why my product was in their best interest. I have 100 percent belief in my bias. So it was not hard to sell. By fixing my truck regularly I have saved over 100,000 dollars by not buying several new trucks in the 25 years I have owned my truck. Not all biases are bad.
