Unit 7 My Life Soundtrack

Music has served as a coping mechanism that I took advantage of to help me get through tough times, comforts me, and reminds me of momentous events that have occurred in my life. I love all types of music, like R&B, Hip Hop, Rock ‘n’ Roll, and many other genres and there are songs in every genre that I listen to that has played a role in my life. The rhythm of music helps me to feel free and allows me to let down my guard and my wall (Janaro & Altshuler, pg. 158). The storytelling that many songs have gives me a place to go when I am in a place that I do not want to be. With the different types of music there could be a large soundtrack created to tell the story of my life. There are plenty of songs from the many genres that can certainly have an effect on my mood and the occasions that I have or had in my life. Music plays a major role in all aspects of my life and without it, I am not sure where I would be or what I would be doing.

During childhood the music that I related the most with was Synth-Pop music. I was happy and carefree when I listened to the bubble-gum pop. Listening to Synth-Pop made me want to dance and have fun with my two sisters. I chose “The Loco-Motion” by Kylie Minogue because it took our minds off the bad things that were happening around us. We were so focused on learning how to do the dance and who could do it better, we did not have time to focus on anything but having fun with one another. Listening to Kylie Minogue gave us the opportunity to be kids and not have to be immersed in the adult drama around us. Synth-Pop helped me get through some tough times in my childhood.

The music that I associated with the most during my adolescent years was Rhythm and Blues (R&B). Listening to R&B during this phase of my life gave me motivation to make sure that my grades were good and that I had my ducks in a row, so that I could leave...
