Assignment 1.1 from Chapter 1 of Communicating in the Workplace

Misunderstanding One:

1. Who was the sender?

I was the sender in the misunderstanding.

2. Who was the receiver?

The receiver was a supply vendor that I ordered supplies from.

3. What was the message?

I was trying to order a certain style of carryout menus for my restaurant.

4. What channel was used to send the message?

Computer based ordering program which was provided by my assistant manager. Basically internet based communication. It was a busy morning at work, short on staff and I rushed my assistant manager to order more carryout menus. I should have been clearer on what type of carryout menus needed to be ordered.

5. What was the misunderstanding that occurred?

The wrong carryout menus arrived at my restaurant, and I had to reorder the correct ones.

6. How could the misunderstanding have been avoided?

A double check of the order and also, I should have called the supplier to ensure the correct items were put in for order.

1. What did you learn about the communication process from this activity?

I learned that as the sender, I should have been more clear on what needed to be accomplished.

2. What seemed to be the main cause of the misunderstandings?

The main cause of the misunderstanding was that it was busy at work, short on staff, and a lot of external noises were happening at the same time. During that time, I quickly notify my assistant manager to order more supplies due to a shortage on the menus. I should have been clearer and kept calm on what needed to be done.
