Hewlett Packard (HP) is currently the market leader within the personal computing industry. The company currently holds sixteen percent of the worldwide market share. The two closest competitors are Lenovo, who hold fifteen percent, and Dell, who holds eleven percent. HP maintains the number one spot with a large distribution network that reaches to almost every country in the world. This vast operation is possible because HP standardizes the products that it ships. The only difference between products in different countries, is that some countries are less developed and use older computing products. HP makes profit of these countries by simply recycling old products used in the US and then reselling them to poorer countries. In a way, these countries can be seen as developing markets for HP to cultivate in the future.

One of the largest opportunities HP has is the emergence of new markets. While HP’s initial products flopped in the mobile phone and tablet market, they are coming back with new tables that are both affordable and easy to use. One of the differentiators of the computing and information technology industry is that technology is constantly being updated and new types of products are always being developed. The only way to maintain market leadership is to anticipate the next big wave of consumer demand and have a product already developed to satisfy that demand. HP was behind the curve on the mobile phone and tablet wave because they had become too complacent with their personal computing products. Now many of the computing companies are realizing that the personal computer market is in a decline, and the tablet market is booming. HP’s golden opportunity will be to develop the product that’s over the horizon and market it to attract a new market, while still maintaining its current consumer base of personal computing.
