It is clear that Mitch has encountered what Mathis (2011) would term "stress overload" (p.489). His personal situation has had a negative impact on work performance and it is evident that he is depressed and may even have some suicidal ideations. As a manager or supervisor, it is imperative that you come to the aid of Mitch. Especially in a case which the person feels that those people closest to him are now gone (i.e. divorce or a death of a loved one), you must not be afraid to intervene and address the issue head-on. These types of circumstances can "affect individuals who otherwise have been coping successfully with life pressures" (Mathis, 2011, p.488). Mitch needs to hear a voice of optimism and the big picture; this would help him through the current moment and paint a positive image of the future.

I would expect that as the supervisor of 10 people, you should have a firm understanding of strengths/weaknesses, likes/dislikes, and the personal backgrounds of each employee. While the managerial hierarchy is important in the workplace, the human aspect takes priority in how we interact and relate to each others with respect and dignity. Living this concept is never more crucial than when fellow workers face challenges or must overcome hardships. The rank structure is very profound in military organizations, but the best leaders are those who can talk to soldiers at different levels, exhibit genuine care, and are vocal during tough times.

Promoting a culture that facilitates open lines of communication is also a major part of the supervisory role. If employees feel as though they cannot trust anyone to reveal a personal issue it can be very dangerous. People need an outlet to discuss problems they may face. This is beneficial both for the individual facing the issue as they seek out assistance, but just as importantly for companies in understanding the reason for declines in performance.
