ASEAN

Introduction about “ASEAN”

ASEAN is known as “ASSOCIATION OF SOUTHEAST ASIA NATION” was preceded by an organisation called the Associates of Southeast Asia, commonly called ASA, an alliance consisting of the Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand that was formed in 1961. The bloc itself, however, was established on 8 August 1967, when foreign ministers of five countries– Indonesia; Malaysia; The Philippines; Singapore; Thailand; met at the Thai Department of Foreign Affairs building in Bangkok and signed the ASEAN Declaration, and hence it is also known as Bangkok Declaration. Later joined group are as follows: Brunei – on 8th Aug 1984; Vietnam – on 28 July 1995; Laos – on 23rd July 1997; Myanmar – on 23rd July 1997; & Cambodia – on 30th Apr 1999.

ASEAN FLAG

Motto: "One Vision, One Identity, One Community"

The Flag represents a stable, peaceful, united and dynamic ASEAN. The colours of the flag - blue, red, white and yellow represents the main colours of the flag of all the ASEAN countries. The 10 stalks represent the ten member countries of ASEAN namely; Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar & Cambodia. Yellow colour stands for prosperity of the ASEAN members. Blue colour stands for peace and stability within the ASEAN members and with rest of the world. White colour stands for purity means transparency in trade within the ASEAN members and with other members of the world. Circle represents the Unity of ASEAN members.

WHY ASEAN FORMED?

The main aim and purpose of ASEAN are as follows:  To accelerate the economic growth, social progress and cultural development in the region through joint endeavours in the spirit of equality and partnership in order to strengthen the foundation for a prosperous and peaceful community of Southeast Asian Nations;  To promote regional peace and stability through abiding respect for justice and the rule of law in the relationship among countries of the region and...
