MODULE 2 CASE ASSIGNMENT

As a non-traditional student, it is imperative to know and understand what is needed to foster an effective study environment. Module 2 is about study techniques. In this case, we will discuss intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation; the challenges of an online study to those of a student who attends class; and how I feel about my academic preparation in English and Math.

Webster’s Dictionary defines motive as something (as a need or desire) that causes a person to act; motivating as to provide with a motive; and motivation as the act or process of motivating. There are two ways to be motivated: internally and externally. Intrinsic motivation is internal. Take a minute to think about someone who loves to garden. They spend almost every free moment tending to whatever they are growing be it flowers, vegetables, herbs, or fruit. They read books about gardening. They watch television shows about gardening. Something inside of them allows them to love gardening. And because they pull weeds, put down special fertilizer, prune, and dote all over their garden, they may win a prize for best yard. Although they are very proud of their work, they could care less about winning Best Yard of Spring 2013. They possess intrinsic motivation-a strong sense of pride and accomplishment without the expectation of recognition from anyone other than themselves. An intrinsically motivated gardener would work just as hard even if there were no contest. Self-satisfaction would be its own reward.

Now picture the days of school fundraisers and one-dollar World’s Finest milk chocolate candy bars complete with a coupon from Pizza Hut.
