Interpersonal Effectiveness - Module 3: Motivation & Needs

I. Motivation: push, drive, encouragement (Motivation Drives)

A. Physical: Basic, Survival

B. Psychological: Has to do with Emotions, Identity – psychological drive

C. Social/Cultural: Family/Cultural/Religion/Friends/Work Expectations

D. Cognitive: Thinking processes, beliefs, academics, career

i. At times it is a combination of several or all

II. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

A. Physiological: Basic Survival Needs

B. Safety: Feel secured if there is a surplus of money to meet the basic survival needs, such as water, food, clothing, shelter, etc. Body, employment, resources, family, health, property, morality (values, beliefs)

C. Love/Belonging: Having friends, family, some type of relationship (sexual intimacy)

D. Esteem: Being able to feel confident, have respect from others, proud of achievement, praising yourself

E. Self-Actualization: morality, creativity, critical and problem solving – Feeling of independency and is able to make decisions to fulfill personal needs

III. Rewards: Strongest Motivators

A. Extrinsic: Real property rewards. (Examples – Money, jewelry, clothing, social)

B. Intrinsic: Comes from within - Can be either, enjoyment or obligation (Satisfaction)

i. Knowing the reward might be the strongest motivator for a person to achieve a particular goal.

ii. What to do to keep a person constantly encouraged, to accomplish a set goal

B. Nationality: (eg, US National) Depends on the nation that you are legally bind to. It is also a your legal status
