Policing Paradise: How the Honolulu Police Department Developed its Brand

Introduction

The Honolulu Police Department used ohana, which means family, to describe the department. Family is the reason why officers joined and stayed with the force. But at one point in time, the police department was losing all of its officers. Some officers were nearing retirement and others were going to higher paying jobs on the mainland, there were other issues not mentioned as to why people were leaving the department. The Honolulu police only accepted 3 percent of the applicants into its six month training class. With the police department being significantly short staffed, they had to take drastic measures on hiring individuals to be part of their family. They decided that a massive recruiting campaign was a good idea and $60,000 was put into recruiting efforts that took many forms.

Recruitment Methods

There are many different recruitment methods Honolulu Police Department can use. They could use all kinds of advertisements. An advertisement is one of the most popular methods when wanting to tell the public about a job opening. The police department could have posted their open positions on the internet at job sites such as Monster, CareerBuilder, Yahoo HotJobs, and Craigslist. Unemployed people are searching those sites on a daily basis. They could have posted the jobs on their own company’s website. Most businesses these days add a careers button to their page where individuals can go check for openings and apply.

Employment agencies are also a good way to advertise your company’s openings. All states provide a public employment service. One major function of these agencies is assisting workers receiving unemployment benefits to find employment. These agencies match employers with qualified workers.
