Charles correa

Charles correa is arguably one of india's greatest architect and is celebrated for his post-war work in india in which he connects modernism with local traditions. Trained in the US in early 1950s, on a monotonous diet of Mies Van der Rohe, he glimpsed the future and decided it was not for him. Instead, he reyurned home and has since built a body of work grown out of a deep understanding of his country's vernacular. Rooted both in modernism and rich traditions of people, place and climate; correa has played a pivotal role in the creation of an architecture and urbanisn for post-war india. His work is the physical manifestation of the idea of indian nationhood, modernity and progress, he has this rare xapacity to give physical form to something as intangible as culture or society. He has created architecture as the reflection of india, ehile maintaining a global relevance. The simple product of climate, landscape, his buildings have always stood out against many of his contemporarie's pursuit of exotic western forms which continue to erupt across india's booming cities.

"In india, sky has profoundly affected our relationships to builtform and to open space. For in a warm clinate, the best place to be in the late evenings and in the early mornings is outdoors, under the open sky. Such spaces have an infinite variations- one step out of a room- into a verandah- and then on to a terrace from which one proceeds to an open courtyard, perhaps shaded by a tree- or by a large pergola overhead.
