CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Cartoons are the most frequent and easily accessible source of entertainment which keeps children occupied. With the vastness of the media and extension of channels it has become easier for children to watch their favourite cartoons on a single click, while also making more convinience for parent to provide their children with this all time activity. Time which was previously spent by children for out door acgtivities are noe been replaced, as children can be found glued to the telelvision set for longer hours, viewing all sorts of cartoons mostly without the supervision of elders, parents are however completely unaware that this might have certain effect on their psycologycal development of the children which Is eventually displayed in their behaviour patterns.

There are wide range of cartoon from fairy tales like “Beauty and the Beast” to action based ones like Ben Ten and Poke man. Children however have their preference in the selection of cartoons while girls are usually into fairly tales and animated Barbie series, Boys and some times Girls ‘usually choose their favourite super hero cartoon like spiderman, batman, or action flicks like Bay Blade or Dragon, Ball –Z among others.

The children nowadays, consider the things they watch in cartoons to be real, they are unable to diffrienciate between fantansy and what children who view shows in which violence is very realistic, frequenty repeated or unpunished imitates what they see, some researchers belive that high level of violence in cartoons can make children more aggressive and young children tend to mimic the negative behaviour they see on television

Students who always pick up fights in the class and exihibit agressive behaviour influenced by violence based cartoon or other programmes which they watch in excess. Children watching too much cartoons often fantasize about the kind of life that various characters are living.
