Incorporating Theory

Nursing theory is an important component in today’s healthcare field mainly due to its direct influence on daily practices, learning and research. These theories can aid nurses to understand their role and purpose in healthcare field. Nursing theories affects nurses along with helping patients and other healthcare members to recognize the important role of nurses in healthcare sector (Coley, 2003). Theory of planned behavior was first introduced by Icek Ajzen which defines the connection between one’s attitude and behavior. Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infection (CLABSI) is major causes of patient ailment, cost and transience (Harnage, 2007). Use of central Line Catheter is an essential part of today’s health care sector which helps to administer intravenous fluid, blood products, medications and total parenteral nutrition, as well as giving access for Hemodialysis, and hemodynamic monitoring. CLABSIs are serous but often preventable when evidence-based guidelines are followed; therefore it is vital that nursing staff needs appropriate education, supervision and proper technique demonstration on central venous catheter (CVC) care.

In today’s oncology patient population, majority have central line catheters. These populations are especially prone to infection due to their low immunity. Therefore preventing infections to them is very vital. Appropriate education is very essential to the nurses associated with patients who have CVCs to prevent CLABSI (Dilek, Ulger & etc, 2012).Many oncology patients received chemotherapy as well as antibiotic therapies. Knowledge plays an important role in preventing CLABSI.
