The Advantages and Disadvantages of Fracking in the UK

Introduction

The potential of fracking has meant it is now possible to extract natural gas from areas where conventional technologies are considered to be ineffective. Hydraulic fracturing, more commonly referred to as fracking, is a procedure whereby natural gas is extracted from shale rock formations which lie deep within the earth’s surface. Vast quantities of water, sand and various chemicals are pumped into the ground under high pressure, fracturing the shale rock and releasing the gas. The procedure of fracking has its equal share of campaigners, however opposition of the practice is very strong.

The objectives of this report are to provide information which:

* Introduces and offers a clear overview into the process of Fracking

,

* Explains in detail the technology or methodology of involved in Fracking

* Explains the motivation and details the effect of introducing this new practice

* Presents relevant data associated with Fracking which is suitably analysed to further illustrate its effectiveness

* Draws a well referenced conclusion, supported by well presented data analysis, as to

the effectiveness and benefits of Fracking.

Whilst conducting research for this report, independent sources have been used and verified when possible.

As a new energy source, shale gas will help to provide energy security and employment opportunities, whilst reducing Britain’s reliance on expensive foreign imports. Fracking is particularly appealing as it is hoped it will replace dwindling North Sea oil and gas supplies. Exploitation of shale gas in the United States during the past decade has resulted in the collapse of domestic gas prices. On the basis of current estimates of shale gas in a licenced area within the Lancashire district, it has been indicated there is enough reserves to supply a quarter of the country’s demand for gas for the next 40 years.
