Death:

Section a) how does Steinbeck present the theme of death in of mice and men

* Vulnerable are left to die (elderly- candy and disabled-Lennie)

* Death is sometimes accidently (mouse an puppy)

* Death is sometimes done for mercy

Section b) how does Steinbeck try to relate this theme to society in America in 1930’s

* No guarantee of survival

* It you are Lennie no chance of living on your own

* If you are slim get people to believe you and be a god like

Power:

Section a) how does Steinbeck present the theme of Power in of mice and men

* Some people have no power – crooks and candy but even though Lennie is not mentally fit he is physically strong

* Those with no power need to stick together – so like George and Lennie as one unit are stronger than individually.

* Power is an illusion – Curley only has power because he is born into it but he has not earned it.

* Leader and follower do George is leader and Lennie is follower

* Slim the “prince of the ranch” is the leader on the ranch.

Bunkhouse

* Safe from the outside world but the people living in the bunkhouse are dangerous enough (killed candy’s dog)

* Loneliness of the farmers as normal people live with families and have a big comfy bed but they have a bunk “8 bunks”

* Lifeless no emotions as people come and when they have earned enough they move “ only 8 bunks”

* The bunkhouse describes the farmers and the emptiness in their lives apart from George and Lennie they travel as a pair.
