Being a new CEO for a small Midwest community hospital, I was asked to improve stakeholder relationships in particular the key players outside the hospital. I know that building strong stakeholder relationships is extremely important for all businesses and that I must first define who are the stakeholders. I must look at all “individuals or groups who have direct interest in an organization’s success.” (text 5) Stakeholders can be within the business or be the outside influences of a business. For me, the most important stakeholders will be my customers, the community in which this facility is based and physician partners.

Face it, if you do not have customers or patients then you are not going to stay operational for long. I would first look at any complaints that may have been filed against the facility and see if there is any truth to the issues. This also may be a good time for me to meet the patients and establish a good rapport with them. This could be accomplished by inviting them to open forums where they can air their complaints and then let me respond to the issue. Just because the last CEO appeared not to care does not mean that I am like him. I would also make my face very well-known throughout the facility to employees and patients. I would add that I would take the time to talk to all that I come across including patients, family members, and employees. How better to know what is going on in my facility then to be part of the team.

Since this is a small community hospital, my next step would be to get out to the community and find out ways that the hospital can help. Could I set up a free health screening, flu shots, and senior citizen clinic or just be part of community days. The facility needs to establish that they are part of the community for them to be trusted.
