Gender Movements

On August 26, in the year of 1920, Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby signed the 19th Amendment to the Constitution into law, which grated women the right to vote. This didn’t move the women’s movement very far, however, until World War II. During the war, the businesses needed workers to continue producing their products and much of the United States men were deployed and so there was only the women left. They were offered the jobs but at a much smaller rate of pay. The woman became encouraged that there was more to life than staying at home and realized that they were capable of much more. After the war, the women were forced to go back home to open up the positions for the returning men, which didn’t sit well with the women because they now wanted more. Finally, in 1964 Title VII of the Civil Rights Act was put into place that would stop discrimination in employment by not only race but by sex as well.
