What is law?

There are many definitions of law. According to Oxford English dictionary, law is defined as the body of enacted and customary rules which is recognized by a community as a binding. Law comes from the Latin words lex or luris which mainly means statute, covenant or agreement. Law also comes from the ancient Greek word nomos which among many other words means rule and can be defined as “an authoritative prescribed direction for moral and legal conduct. From Wikipedia law can be defined as “system of rules and guidelines which are enforced through social institution to govern behavior. Law can also be defined as the effort of humanity to create principles which could lead to civilization. In other word this is to say that law is ways that man thought of, to help him to bring about civilization. Sir John Salmond, defined law as “the body of principles recognized and applied by the state in the administration of justice”. This would mean that law consists of rules recognized and acted on by court of justice. In other words it means that law is a set of rules which are followed by the government and put into action by the court of justice. According to Montesquieu, a French political thinker, he defines law as a “series of relationships which are derived from a nature of things.” Here nature referring to both. According to Sir John Almond, the body of principles recognized and applied by the state in the administration of justice. Nevertheless, John Austin describes law as command set by a superior being to an inferior being enforced by sanctions. The real meaning of law is to attain justice. Justice means by the idea of fairness and equality and also does the right and wrong. Law is important for every country. Without law, that country will encounter a lot of problems and people will start creating funny attitudes around. With law, it will discipline everyone.
