Gallstone Disease

The gastrointestinal disease that I have chosen to learn more about is a disease that I have suffered from, gallstones or the medical term is Cholelithiasis. Gallstones are formed within the gallbladder, which is a small organ that is located under the liver. The purpose of the gallbladder is to help the digestive process by storing bile and secrets it into the small intestine when the food enters. The bile is made up of several substances, cholesterol, bilirubin and bile salts.

Gallstones are made up of pieces of solid material that forms in the gallbladder. There are two different types of gallstones: cholesterol stones and pigment stones. There are many different factors that come together to create gallstones: body weight, decreased motility, decreased movement of the gallbladder, diet. Gallstones also can be created when there is an imbalance in the substances that make up bile. There are also many risk factors for getting gallstones: genetics, obesity, estrogen, ethnic background, gender, age, cholesterol drugs, diabetes, and losing weight rapidly.

When it comes to what lifestyle changes you need to make to avoid or to cure gallbladder disease, it really just depends on why you have contracted the disease. For example, when I had gallbladder disease it was caused from my pregnancy, and had to have my gallbladder removed exactly one month after I gave birth. Another example of a life style change that can be done to avoid gallbladder disease is you are overweight, then you could work on losing weight so you can lower your chances to get gallstones.

If you ever have to deal with gallstones you only have to options one what treatment you are going to do. The first option is to just deal with the pain until it passes, but there is not guarantee that you will not have a flair up again.
