Footloose

The performance ‘Footloose’ is one of the main shows in the Freed Center, and the show of this season appeared to be successful with full of audiences. As there is the original storyline and numbers, a main role of the director would be stage adaptation, management of actors, and making the performance appropriate to entire families.

There was no problem with the stage installation. All settings were fit to the background of the show and they worked well during the performance. Audiences could see the 1980s in the town of Bomont.

Also, whenever the scene changed, movements of settings by actors flowed in natural. However, I could feel that there were too many scene changes that made the story go fast, but considering that the performance was a musical, it could concentrate on numbers more than the story.

Directions of the performance was great. Especially the scene with three red pieces of cloth. That scene totally represented the number and the situation they involved in. However, in Scene number eight ‘The Moore Home’ with the number ‘Somebody’s Eyes’, Chuck, Ariel’s boyfriend, did not seize audiences’ eyes. Even though the role of him was ‘Somebody’s Eyes’. In Act II scene 4: Under the Train Bridge, during the musical, I felt that it would be much better to having more stage installation before the bridge singing ‘Almost Paradise’. During the number in this scene, the two young lovers was beautiful.

Generally, the cast of characters was good. I hoped that the voice of Ren McCormack could be louder, but thinking about his was a teenage boy, there would be no choice. The existence of minister of Bomont, Reverend Shaw Moore, in each scene was huge because of his enormous height and low tone of voice. He was the opposite side of Ren, who should account for a large presence to lead the story. By selecting him, it was successful to lead the story.
