Why Managers Dislike Young Professionals

In today’s economy, finding a job is not so easy. According to Jonathan Horn from the San Diego Union Tribune, people between ages 22 and 29 will have a lot harder time finding a job. Horn did a joint study between American Express and Millennial Branding on workplace expectations. Employees and managers both participated in the study and the results showed the feelings between the two were not mutual. Although more than half of the employees said their managers can offer experience, about half of the managers had complaints about their employees stating the employees had unrealistic pay expectations, a poor work ethic, and are easily distracted. Because of the negative impressions the managers have on the employees, its creating workplace drama, according to Dan Schwabel, the founder of Millennial Branding.

I have heard from friends of mine expecting unrealistic pay that have no real job experience. As hard as it is to get a job, people will turn down a job that is only willing to pay $12 an hour to continue to be jobless. They believe zero an hour is better which I think is absolutely ridiculous. I have been on both sides of this argument at one point in time in my career. Being young, upper management typically do not take you as serious as older employees regardless of skill level or positive impact you may bring to the team. I believe the pay should match the skill set, experience, and expertise at the specific position in question.

Poor work ethic can be an attribute of any particular person regardless of age. Saying 22-29 year olds are the only ones with poor work ethic is not a fact. 22-29 year olds are actually crucial to the development and growth of our economy because when the elders are gone the youth must step up and fill in those shoes.
