The nursing and midwifery code of practice should give guidelines for nurses and midwives to follow. It displays a professional and personal conduct expected of you as a nursing or midwifery student in order for you to be fit to practice. It is based on strict standards set in the professional code for conduct for qualified nurses and midwives. It should promote anti-discriminatory factors through health and social care in the UK. The nursing and midwifery code of practice makes it illegal for any nurse or midwife working in any health care centre (hospital or private clinic) across the country to disobey certain rules which could potentially end their career as a nurse of midwife. If the rules are broken a nurse or midwife will be questioned about it, disciplined and could potentially be wiped of their license to practice as a nurse or midwife.

The nursing and midwifery code covers and training nurse or midwife in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. It also covers any qualified nurse in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. This means that any professional nurse or midwife must follow the code of conduct or they can be struck off the register. It applies in any hospital, GP surgery, or health care centre in the UK. This is because it must be followed by strict standards for a person to be deemed fit enough to have in whatever work place it is.
