What is the Cold War?

Wars should not be celebrated. Those directly involved in it (soldiers) do not necessarily benefit directly from it but because of their dedication to service they are compelled to obey orders and go for war. It is evident that people will lose their lives. Not all soldiers leave home and return. Of those who manage to return home many of them came back with physical, mental or spiritual disorders. However, the wars that broke out during the period of the cold war were no exception.

Cold war is however the term that was used to describe the relationship between America and the Soviet Union between 1945 and 1980 which is the period after World War 2 - (historylearningsite.co.uk). However, during this period they did not directly fight each other because definitely the consequences would be appalling. Rather they supported other states to fight for their beliefs on their behalf. For example South Vietnam was anticommunist and they were assisted by America during the war while North Vietnam was pro-Communist and fought the south (and the Americans) using weapons provided by communist Russia and China (historylearningsite.co.uk). In effect both Russia and China supported North Vietnam to fight South Vietnam who was supported by America.

From personal interviews in 2012, when Sherri was asked what words or phrases came to mind when she think of the term Cold War she mentioned that sad days in the Baltic area in Europe; Delwin (personal communication, 2012) however stated that it was a period when many senseless wars rose up while Sandra (personal communication, 2012) pointed out that it was a period when America and Russia displayed their distrust for each other. From the definition given that the cold war could be the geopolitical tensions and proxy wars fought between the United States and the Soviet Union, the interviewees were close to the saying the meaning given.
