Beowulf and 13th Warrior Connections

There are several differences between Beowulf and the 13th Warrior, but many similarities. The story line is still the same, the ongoing fight of good versus evil.

Ibn Fadlan is an Arab from the far south. Ibn Fadlan was a real historical person.He wrote “A Viking Funeral”. “A Viking Funeral” was had a great influence on the writing of “Beowulf”. Ibn Fadlan was a poilitical diplomat from Bagdad, who traveled to the north, Danesland, and was chosen as the 13th warrior in the movie, because he was not a north man.

In the movie a girl says “Lo, there I see my father….” at the Viking funeral before she dies. In the Viking Funeral a girl says “Lo, there I see my father…”

In both, the movie and The Viking Funeral, there is an Angel of Death, which is an old lady in which plays a role in the funeral ceremony. In the movie the Angel of Death uses bones in order to see and prophesy to them.

In the poem Beowulf says “The omens were good…” In the movie it is shown with a dramatic scene in which the angel of death throws bones.

In the movie the men volunteer to join Bulvi on his journey. In the poem, Beowulf assembles his warriors himself. In the movie the men go around in the tent volunteering to join Bulvi.

In the movie the 13th Warrior and the poem Beowulf, They sail over the sea, in time they thought it would take them. They arrived on the coast of Denmark and the guardian of the coast met them and challenged them.

As they traveled to Herot, they studied the countryside, in both the movie and the poem.

In the movie, Hrothgar talks about the village. In the poem Hrothgar tells Beowulf and his Geats what damage Grendel has done.

“Fate must unwind as it must!” is said in both the movie and the poem by Hurger, but in the movie Herger says “You may hide but you won’t live a moment longer”.

Grendel then comes crashing in the door in the poem where there is only Grendel but in the movie there are many Wendols.
