For lung cancer the routine care for the person follows as such once they have been diagnosed with the condition areas follows;

- They normally receive chemotherapy in order to try and shrink the mass of the cancerous cells. This is the most effective treatment to for small cell lung cancer as it can help to control the growth of the cell. Some chemotherapy drugs are taken orally while some are given via an IV. However chemo causes side effects such as nausea. You might be given medication such as hyrocodone or morphine to reduce the level of the pain.

- The next step will then be surgery to try and remove cancerous cell. There three different types of surgery: Lobectomy – one or two lobes are removed. Pneumonectomy – the entire lung is removed, used when cancer cells are in the middle of the lung or have spread throughout the lung. Wedge resection or segmentectomy – a small piece of the lung is removed. The extent of the removal depends on the size of the tumour, its location and how far it has spread. However despite complete surgical removal a large portion of patients have a recurrence of cancer and end up dying from it.

- Radiation is another type of treatment that can be used. High energy x-rays are used to kill the cancer cells and shrink the tumours. The radiation is given externally. Radiation is normally combined with the use of chemo and surgery; however it may not be used if surgery is not available.

People who can't have surgery may have a special type of radiation called stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). This isn't surgery but a series of very high doses of radiation that are aimed at the cancer. SRS is usually given to treat tumours that have spread to the brain.

The treatments listed can be given in any particular order but surgery is the main option for lung cancer
