Thesis: Research shows that single-sex classes are better for boys and girls, therefore, should be
explored more broadly.
I. During the first 200 years in America, an education was not in the life plan for girls.
A. Initially, education was only meant for boys.
B. In the 19th century, there was in increase in the number of coed schools.
C. In 1972, a bill was passed called "Title IX", prohibiting sex discrimination in
educational institutions.
II. One significant advantage of single-sex classes in the reduction of biases that occur
in coed classes.
A. Due to the difference in energy and engagement levels, boys were getting more
attention.
B. Girls misbehaving is not tolerated as much as with boys.
III. Students are benefits from being in single-sex classrooms.
A. As late as the 1960s or even into the early 1970s in some parts of the U.S., boys
and girls were routinely separated for some of their classes.
B. Teachers can now use more gender-focused techniques.
C. There are less distractions with the sexes are separated.
D. Levels of self-esteem are different between boys and girls.
IV. Society tells us that it is important that we not get too involved with
generalizations.
A. Most boys and girls do well in school learning together.
B. No matter what type of classroom a student is in, co-educational or single sex, if
the student’s attitude is poor they are not going to try as hard.
“Writing an Outline” (Kaplan University Writing Center, n.d.) has helpful tips on helping
someone to organize their ideas for the final paper. I worked with the sample of full sentence
outline. Practicing getting together a outline helped me to see my ideas in a roadmap fashion.
There is nothing like seeing important facts organized.
