Introduction

To effectively understand how to communicate, we must know how to synthesize our thoughts and messages to which we’re trying to communicate with. Simply…communication has three components (1) sender, (2) message, and (3) audience (AFPAM 36-2241, 2011). Successful or unsuccessful communication can be contributed to understanding what the message is conveying to the recipient/audience. According to the article The Johari Window, “trust” can be a benefactor to successful understanding of the communications process for individual and group relationships (Joseph Luft & Harry Ingham).

Three Most Important Concepts Learned

Communication is the process of sharing ideas, information, and messages with others. Misdirection of resources and manpower can cripple management and leadership credibility, if lines of communication are not clearly defined, has brevity and clarity. The concepts of disclosure, self-disclosure, and feedback are instrumental when facilitating and establishing relationship within the organization. These concepts are essential interpersonal skills. “Interpersonal skills enable you to interact with people effectively…building positive relationships with enough rapport to communicate openly so problems can get solved” (Bacal, R., p.177).

Application of Concepts

Faith and Learning

It’s hard enough understanding someone who speaks the same language, but communicating with someone else, who speaks a different language, is even more difficult. Barriers in to communication can destroy achieving goals. In Genesis 11: The Tower of Babel, God demonstrated the power of communication (language), and how it contributed to confusion, organizational breakdown, and interpersonal skills. The LORD said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then by nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not...
