This essay will show the mental and physical effects of childhood trauma and the effects of the development of adolescence children. Trauma that occurs during childhood results from conditions that are psychosocial and medical. A traumatic event can cause a person to endure emotional and psychological stress (Roehlkepartain, King, Wagener, & Benson, 2006).These traumatic conditions create severe consequences that often harm the victim and the victim’s role in society. De Bellis & Zisk (2014) defines trauma as the experience of being exposed to threats of death, physical violence and abuse (mental, physical, and sexual). Childhood traumas that cause effects on the child development include accidents, victims of bullying, domestic violence, war, and child maltreatments.
Child maltreatments are listed as mistreatments that are physical, sexual, neglect and emotional abuse that results in conditions of distress, post traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) and other stress related disorders. Children that experience the affects of trauma, whether interpersonal intentional or chronic during their childhood face a growing risk of developing anxiety, depression, alcoholism and substance abuse problems later in life as adults ( De Bellis, et.al, 2014 ). The symptoms used to diagnose PTSD are found to be the difference in stress symptoms that are biological and the functioning of the brain structures that cause delays in the traumatized child’s development in behavior, cognitive and emotional regulations. Gender plays an important role influencing the effectiveness of the trauma victims.
Studies have shown that men and women that have been exposed to trauma as a child, who after diagnoses did not find a correlation between trauma and high stress disorders levels found in more men than women( De Bellis, et.al, 2014 ).
