Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Having the fact that written materials last longer than those of verbally expressed, campus journalism is a very good avenue of making, leaving, and valuing a legacy. It is believed that the worth of a person is measured through the life he has spent while alive and by the kind of journey that he has trekked during his times. These bequests now can be traced from his memories that have been instilled on other people’s minds. One way of mapping these out is by reading the pieces the individual has written. Campus journalism can be one tool in doing this.

According to the City Schools of Manila (Ramirez 1999) campus journalism is an enjoyable co-curricular activity of the school paper staff in collecting, organizing, and presenting news; in writing editorials, columns, literary articles and features; in copying reading and headlining― all for the purpose of putting up a school organ. It is an activity where students are given the chance to be exposed in gathering information, organizing facts, and creating a meaningful form of literature, (Banquito 2010). They are tasked to do some interviews, news coverage, and press-related works which contribute in the development of their interpersonal and intrapersonal skills. It is with this kind of engagement that students can go places, compete on press conferences, meet personalities and partake to social activities.

However, despite the benefits the student writers enjoy, some of them experience oppression from others especially from those who hold higher positions who have been the subject of the formers’ articles. They use their power to threaten or abuse the student writers...
