Media/Women’s Roles

I believe that the single most influential force in today’s society that sets the tone for an individual’s personal values is the media. The media defines what is cool, new, and exciting. It sends out a message to the public of what opinion they should hold and why. Those opinions may not always be in line with Christianity such as same-sex marriage or pro-choice.

“We live in a society that depends on information and communication to keep moving in the right direction and do our daily activities like work, entertainment, health care, education, personal relationships, traveling and anything else that we have to do” (Abdulwasea, 2008).

This affects Christians both positively and negatively. I get bible verses sent to my phone everyday through an app I use. I can watch church services online and through television. I have the bible on my iPhone. There are many positives for the Christian community for the media. It is another way to share the Gospel. However, there are some downsides to the media because negative things are being shared.

Porn can be easily purchased through cable boxes and easily accessed through the Internet. Marijuana is considered “okay” now because the media is pushing it to be legalized and that is the “cool” things to do. Body image is being destroyed for young women because they think they must look like these celebrities.

I come from a Greek family and my boyfriend comes from a Hispanic family. We have a lot of the same ways of life. We both came from a community surrounded by others from our culture. The main things that stuck out to me with our cultures are women are considered to do all the housework while the man goes to make the money.

I can compare this to today’s American society as an ethnic group. In today’s society, women are considered equal with men. In other countries, that is not so. At 20 years old, I am still adjusting to the fact that I do not have to stay at home and I can be a workingwoman. I...
