I see the following conflict preferences in this case study:

Compromise

Jane knew what she wanted but was looking for the team to join her plan or vision. Jill showed an interest to lead but acknowledges her lack of skills therefore she is willing to assist while learning.

Accommodation

Jane tried to maintain the relationships when the conflict grew stronger. Roger was willing to work together to preserve the relationships while he was acquiring the necessary skills.

Avoidance

Jill and Roger was not pursuing their own goals but supporting others goals. Therefore, it is apparent that they do not like conflict and are trying to avoid the conflict. They need to use their skills and capabilities because by not been involved they might miss out on an opportunity. Jane tries to forget about the agenda as the conflict intensifies and dismisses the meeting to avoid making a choice about the agenda. Denise avoids the conflict by stating that these issues need to be decided by Jane and she assumes that she is entitled to the position because of seniority. John stated openly to Denise that she always avoids issues by not wanting to discuss them.

Competition

Conflict arises when Denise sees this as a way to obtain her own goals without taking others into consideration or what is best for the organization. Denise thinks that should she not win in this situation she would be ridiculed by others and it seems that she cannot stand the thought of losing. Competition can have positive and negative effects. It can be positive when the person will take responsibility for actions therefore decisions can be made during deadlock. It can be negative when the competitor ignores good ideas from others or attacks others personally. Jane needs to determine when competition is needed or counterproductive and take appropriate action. Denise puts her personal motives above the team’s, she attempts to manipulate Jane to win, and appears threatened by John.
