Neurobiology

I will be discussing 2 different neurological disorders, shaken baby syndrome and malnutrition which both can occur in development and how they can affect development. Although the brain is protected by the bones of the skull, it is highly sensitive to some forms of injury (Feldman, 2014). An injury that comes from a form of child abuse is shaken baby syndrome, that’s when an infant is shaken by a caretaker or parent, usually done out of frustration or anger due to a baby’s crying. Shaking a baby can lead to the brain rotating within the skull, causing blood vessels to tear and destroy the intricate connections between neurons. According to (Feldman, 2014) the results can be devastating, which can lead to severe medical problems, long-term physical and learning disabilities and often deaths, estimates of the incidence of shaken baby syndrome range from 600 to 1400 cases a year in the United States.

When an infant doesn’t have the proper nutrition, they cannot reach their physical potential, and they may suffer cognitive and social consequences as well. (Feldman, 2014) infants should consume about 50 calories per day for each pound they weigh. Malnutrition is a condition of having an improper amount and balance of nutrients. Children who have been chronically malnourished during infancy later score lower on IQ test and don’t do as well in school.
